01: Create An Etsy Store

One of the quickest and easiest ways to generate passive income is to open an Etsy Store. I’m passionate about showing other women how to create passive income via Etsy. I currently have 4 active stores on Etsy. My BlackGirlMagic Co Store has earned over $5000 + in the last 12 months. That is not bad considering that I’ve never had to ship a single item out.

You can start an Etsy store for twenty cents. This is not a typo. Etsy charges .20 cents to list an item. Connect your Etsy store to a Print On Demand Application like Printful and you are ready to sell items.

02: Create An Online Course

Creating a course is an excellent way to earn passive income online. All you need is a topic you are passionate about and that is both useful and profitable. Then, you can sell your course through a platform like ThriveCart, Teachable, Podaia, Udemy, or Gumroad.

Identify a need and provide a solution. Don’t overthink the process. I can be a small course or even an email course where you send out the content of the course via emails.

I currently host my courses on ThriveCart. I absolutely love this passive income idea. Check out my courses at Courses.

03: Create A Membership Site

Make sure that you select a theme that you can grow with. Most free themes do not come with support or updates. Research your competition and see what themes they are using. You want a theme that you can tweak and personalize the look so that you don’t end up with a cookie-cutter feel. Also, understand that choosing the wrong theme could result in your site loading slowly or not transitioning when someone is viewing the site on their mobile device.

There are several different well-known themes to choose from. I use 17th Ave Designs which is built on the Genesis Parent Theme. Other well-known theme builders include Astra, and Elementor.

04: Launch A YouTube Channel

If your blog is your house, then think of your plugins as your accessories. Plugins are essential. There are going to be plugins that you will need to install in order for your theme to work ( these are normally pre-installed) or you get directions on installing them when you are installing your theme to WordPress.

Here is my list of must-have plugins:

  • Math Rank
  • Google Site Kit
  • Yoast Duplicate Post
  • Grow With MediaVine

05: Affiliate Marketing

One of the most overlooked tools that you need to have from day one is a mailing list. Your mailing list is money in the bank and you own your mailing list. Having a mailing list allows you to have direct contact with your readers.

I use ConvertKit and it is amazing.

06: Sell Print On Demand

Create and sell print-on-demand products: Print-on-demand platforms like Printful allow you to create and sell custom products, like t-shirts or mugs, without having to hold any inventory.

You can set up your free Print On Demand Account With Printful Right Here.

Here are a few reasons why you should start a print-on-demand store.

  • They allow anyone to create and sell customized products without having to invest in inventory or production upfront. This makes it easy for individuals and small businesses to get started selling physical products.
  • They handle all aspects of production, fulfillment, and shipping, which means that sellers don’t have to worry about setting up their own production and fulfillment processes.
  • They offer a wide range of products that can be customized, including t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, and more, which gives sellers a lot of options for creating unique and interesting products.
  • You don’t have to be a designer, you can purchase POD graphics on sites like Creative Fabrica to use on your store.

07: Sell Digital Products

Sell digital products: Digital products, like ebooks or printables, can be created once and sold multiple times. You can sell them through platforms like Etsy or on your own website. This is by far my favorite along with selling courses. You keep more of your money because you are selling a product that is either a PDF, A link inside a PDF that links to a Canva Template, or files for the end user to download.

Here is a digital product that I sell. It’s called the Social Content Calendar

You could also sell canva templates such as Pinterest pins like the ones featured below.

Let’s Get The Ball Moving

I just gave you 5+ simple ways to get the ball moving. You can create your own products or you can use a PLR service and obtain done for your products as well. You don’t have to create your own products. Try a few things and see what connects with your audience.

Final Thoughts

If you are a new blogger or a seasoned blogger, one of the quickest ways to earn income and jumpstart your blog is to create something to sell. It may be a course or a simple canva file. People are willing to purchase products that they need. Figure out what people need and fill the void.

Pre-Planning Stage

Before you jump head-first into the frying pan of blogging, I highly suggest that you take a week or two and just do an in-depth search on what blogging is, terms, tools, processes, SEO, and everything in between. I see so many bloggers in groups that will say, I launched my blog today, what do I need to do next? That is an absurd way to start a business. I can’t imagine that you would open a Coffee Shop and know zero about Coffee. Imagine being open for business and you don’t know the coffee flavors or how to brew coffee. You will save yourself a ton of heartache, wasted time, and money if you simply spend some time learning about blogging first.

1. Pick Solid Hosting

Your hosting is one of those items that are behind the scenes but plays such a critical role in your blog’s functioning. You absolutely need to be self-hosted. If your goal is to earn money from your blog, then you need to be self-hosted. I discuss why in this article on Self-Hosting. I currently use Bluehost and so far, it has been ok!. I had a few issues in the beginning. I will honestly say they have gotten better over time.

2. Pick A Premium Theme

Other well-known theme builders include Astra and Elementor.

3. Select Good Plugins

  • RankMath – This is a cool Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Plugin that enables you to optimize your content. I recently switched over from YOAST SEO To Rank Math
  • Google Site Kit – Makes installing Google Analytics to your blog site easy. You can also view some of the analytics info right from your WordPress dashboard.
  • Yoast Duplicate Post- A simple plugin that allows you to duplicate a post. You can create a template of a post style and use it over and over again vs. having to create a post from scratch.
  • Grow By MediaVine All-in-one social sharing. Not only can you add social share buttons, you can also insert the pictures and text that will be shared when someone opts to share your blog post. $39 a year.

4. Implement A Mailing List

One of the most overlooked tools that you need to have from day one is a mailing list. Your mailing list is money in the bank and you own your mailing list. Having a mailing list allows you to have direct contact with your readers.

I use ConvertKit and it is amazing.

Automation

5. Automate Your Processes

One of the best things that you can do in your business is to automate any processes that you can automate. There are several tools that will allow you to automate your social media. Take heed and automate. Use tools such as Simplified to Pre-schedule your content on social media. If you are just getting started, you can use FB Business Suite To pre-schedule content to both FB and IG. My current favorite tool is Simplified. Not only can I use it to pre-schedule content, it comes with a suite of tools that is amazing.

If you want to get a jumpstart on scheduling content for the entire year, then use the Social Media Content Calendar, it is done for you content. It includes stock photos, canva templates and so much more.

The goal is to batch-create content, plug it into the automation tools and let the tools post your content for you. Hence you don’t need to wake up on a daily basis, thinking about what you are going to post today. Some of your blogging success will depend on your ability to automate processes.

6. Schedule Your Pins With Tailwinds

Understand that Pinterest is to Bloggers What gas is to a car. You can drive the car with 89 gas but your car will drive better with premium. Pinterest Pins are premium gas for your blog. Pinning manually to Pinterest is time-consuming and tedious. Using Tailwinds enables you to take one Pin and schedule it to multiple boards over a period of time.

Pinterest is one of the easiest ways to get eyes on your blog and get your blog noticed.

Social Media

7. Choose the Best Social Media Platform

Social media can play a significant role in your blogging success. In a perfect world, you would want to be on all platforms everywhere. However, we know that is not practical. You need to master one or two social media platforms. I am not saying that you shouldn’t post to all social media. I am simply suggesting that you become an expert at one or two of them. Take your pick and become an expert so that you completely understand the ins and outs of your chosen social media platform(s). Figure out which platform(s) will work best for what you hope to achieve with your blogging business.

Understand that Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Pinterest, and Tiktok all work differently. If you are going to use Pinterest to drive traffic then be the best at Pinterest. Know all the nuances, ins, and outs of Pinterest. Figure out where your audience is hanging out and navigate there.

8. Engage With Others On Social Media

Blogging is a team sport and as such you need a team. It’s important for you to engage with other folks on social media. Make sure that you have added social sharing to your blog posts. I currently use Grow with MediaVine. You want your readers to assist you in getting your blog out.

What Are Sponsored Posts? Everything You Need To Know

Tips & More To Snag The Perfect Brand Partner

We are all searching for the coveted “sponsored post” When it happens to you as a blogger, you really begin to feel like you’ve made it. If you don’t know what a sponsored post is, let me explain it real quick. A sponsored post is a piece of content that is created by an influencer, blogger, or publisher in partnership with a brand. The content is typically published on the blogger’s website or the influencer’s website or social media channels, and it is designed to promote the brand’s products or services. Sponsored posts can be a powerful way for brands to reach new audiences and build their reputation, but they can also be controversial if not done properly.

how to get sponsored posts

What are sponsored posts?

Sponsored posts in a nutshell, are blog posts or social media posts (think instagram, facebook & twitter) that companies and brands pay you the blogger or influencer a fee to create, write. It could also be a content that they provide. in exchange for sharing with your audience, you receive compensation.

Sponsored Posts Basics

Below I’ll cover some of the basics and nuances of sponsored posts. This is simple information that you need to grasp in order to have a broader understanding of what goes into landing sponsored blog posts from brands, companies, and advertisers. I’ll also break down the mechanics of how to earn money with sponsored posts.

DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, ie., I earn a commission if you decide to make a purchase and sometimes if you just click on a link at no additional cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for more info.

This post is mainly about sponsored posts on blog sites; however, you can apply all the same rules to other social media platforms such as YouTube videos, TikTok videos, Instagram posts, reels, and a hidden gem – Your newsletter.

Why Would Brands And Companies Pay For Sponsored Blog Posts?

Brands and companies often pay for sponsored blog posts as a way to promote their products or services to a targeted audience. There are several reasons why brands and companies pay for sponsored blog posts. First and foremost, sponsored blog posts can help increase brand awareness and reach a wider audience. Bloggers and content creators often have a large following on their platforms, and a sponsored blog post can help expose the brand or company to this audience.

Another reason brands and companies pay for sponsored blog posts is to drive sales. If a blogger writes a positive review of a product or service and includes a link to the brand’s website, it can help generate sales for the company. Sponsored blog posts can also help a brand or company establish credibility and authority in their industry by being featured on a reputable blog or platform.

Brand Awareness. A new brand may find it practical to work with bloggers and influencers that already have a built-in audience. Brands may be looking to expand their demographics. As in the case with me, my Brag Differently brand is geared to “Black Women” they are my core audience. A brand may be looking to target a specific demographic that you speak to.

At the end of the day, we – the bloggers, the influencers, and more, all have our own dedicated following of individuals who trust us. Hence when we make a suggestion, it isn’t taken lightly. Our voice carries weight and the power in our voice is way better than a random advertisement popping up on a blog page. Companies understand this.

Example #1

Chances are you have already posted and shared information on products that you love. Let’s say that one of the products is a hair care product that you use and you always receive compliments from your followers on how shiny your hair is. It would carry a lot more weight if you recommended the same product vs. an ad popping up. Would you be more willing to try a product that is recommended by someone you trust vs an ad (and an ad from a product you aren’t familiar with)?

Here Are A Few Tips For Getting Brand Collaborations ( 9 Key Things You Need To Know And Do Before Getting Started With Sponsored Blog Post)

This assumes that you are past the “I started a blog yesterday” phase and you already have a solid blog that is well built and covers all the basics such as being self-hosted, using a premium theme, you have a solid social media presence, and you’ve built a following.

Build Your Reputation

Before you can start getting sponsored posts, you need to build up your reputation as an influencer or content creator. This means creating high-quality content that engages your audience and establishes you as an expert in your field.

Identify your target brands

Think about the brands that you would like to work with and why. What do they stand for, and how do they align with your values and audience? This will help you focus your efforts and create more targeted proposals.

Reach out to brands that you are interested in working with. From day one of launching Brag Differently, I reached out to Ellevest. Once you have identified your target brands and created a media kit, it’s time to start reaching out to them. You can do this through email, social media, or even by attending events and networking with industry professionals. When reaching out, be sure to clearly articulate the value that you can bring to the brand and how a collaboration would benefit both parties.

a guide to sponsored posts

Create A Sponsor page or Media kit

You should have a media kit from day one. You simply don’t know what opportunity may knock at your door. Preparation is key. We have all heard the saying, “Stay Ready, And You Won’t Have To Get Ready.” You absolutely want to be ready. You may not have a large following, but you might have a specific demographic that the brand is trying to reach.

A media kit is a document that provides information about you and your blog or social media channels, including your audience demographics, traffic statistics, and content themes. This will help brands understand your value proposition and make informed decisions about collaborating with you.

  • An introduction to who you are and what your blog is about.
  • A description of the type of content you publish and your target audience, along with relevant blog stats such as monthly visitors and pageviews.
  • Your social media or YouTube following, if applicable.
  • A list of sponsorship opportunities you offer, such as blog posts, link inserts, or a mention in a post. It may be helpful to customize these options based on the brand you are working with.
  • Namedropping any previous sponsored partners and providing links to relevant sponsored posts can give companies an idea of the type of content they can expect from you.
  • Testimonials from past partners, if applicable.
  • Your contact information.

Negotiate Terms

If a brand is interested in working with you, the next step is to negotiate the terms of the collaboration. This includes things like the length of the partnership, the scope of the content, and the compensation. It’s important to be transparent and fair and to make sure that both parties are clear on the expectations and deliverables.

Create Incredible Content

Remember that Content is King and with great content comes loyal followers and readers which will enable you can attract top-tier-level brands

Research your competition

Research other bloggers and influencers that serve your same niche audience and see what they are up to. Check and see what brands are sponsoring them. Brands have money to spend and your competition does not have ownership of these brands. A closed mouth does not get fed.

Continue To Network

Do not be a hit and quit it. Keep in contact with your sponsors and see if they have anything else in their pipeline.

Build Your Newsletter & Mailing List

Best Kept Secret, pitch to brands that appear on Google Ad Sense. This gives you insight into brands that are already interested in working with you. This is a great way to find additional brands to pitch to.

Here are some general steps you can follow when pitching brands for sponsored posts:

  1. Research the brand and its target audience: It’s important to have a good understanding of the brand and its values, as well as the type of audience it is trying to reach. This will help you tailor your pitch to the brand’s specific needs and interests.
  2. Determine the value you can offer: Think about what unique value you can offer to the brand through a sponsored post. This might include your reach, your engagement, or your ability to create high-quality content that aligns with the brand’s message.
  3. Outline your pitch: Clearly explain the benefits of working with you and how a sponsored post will help the brand achieve its marketing goals. Be sure to include information about your audience and the type of content you can create.
  4. Follow up: If you don’t hear back from the brand after your initial pitch, don’t be afraid to follow up. It can take time for brands to review and respond to pitches, and a follow-up can help remind them of your proposal.
  5. Be professional and polite: Remember to always be professional and respectful when pitching brands. Even if a brand is not interested in working with you, maintaining a positive relationship can lead to future opportunities.

Find A Brand you like And Pitch To Them

When I started BragDifferently.com (which was previously the Melanin Goddess) I reached out to Ellevest directly. The payoff was fantastic and they were part of the reason I earned over $2000 in my first 30 days of blogging. I was already using Ellevest and I thought it would be beneficial to my readers. Here is a sample of an email pitch that I use on a regular basis. Keep it simple and to the point.

Search their websites and look for PR contact and email that person directly.

SIDENOTE: If a company reaches out to you, then consider working with them. They may already be a part of an affiliate network that you have a profile on. Do your due diligence and make sure that the partnership benefits you and your readers. I recently had a company reach out to me with a CBD product – that does not speak to my core mission, thus I declined the partnership. All money is not good money.

Be aware of the spammer brands. You’ll know because they will normally just ask you to share a link to their product. Nobody gets anything for free, your blog is a business. I don’t bother to respond to these companies and I will normally block their emails.

All Money Is Not Good Money

stay away from the spammy folks that simply offer you money to share a link.”

Final Thoughts

If you are a new blogger or a seasoned blogger, take the time to do your research so that when opportunity knocks you are prepared to answer the door. Sponsored posts can be an awesome opportunity to monetize your blog site or social media platform, however, don’t do a zillion sponsored blog posts as you will begin to look spammy. If the product does not bring value and you honestly wouldn’t use the product yourself, then I suggest that you not promote the product.

Do’s Of Pinterest Marketing Strategy

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to Pinterest marketing, there are certain strategies that can help to optimize your efforts. Here are some basic recommendations for maximizing the impact of your Pinterest Marketing Strategy. Make sure you implement these items out the gate to be more effective.

  • Make sure to fully complete your profile.
  • Create your first five boards.
  • Utilize secret boards to save content for future use.
  • Choose a visually appealing cover photo.
  • Engage actively with other users on the platform.
  • Follow your competitors to stay up-to-date on their strategies.
  • Share your blog posts on Pinterest.
  • Join relevant community boards to connect with like-minded users.
  • Leverage Pinterest analytics. Take advantage of the tools that Pinterest provides. Pinterest Analytics allows you to see which of your pins are performing the best in terms of impressions, clicks and saves. This can help you understand what types of content are resonating with your audience and create more of it. For more detailed information on the specifics of Pinterest Analytics read this.

Dont’s of Pinterest Marketing Strategy

To ensure that you are getting the most out of your Pinterest marketing efforts, it is important to avoid making certain mistakes. Even if you have high-quality visuals and use effective tools, small missteps can hinder your ability to expand your reach. Here are some things to avoid:

pinterest strategies
  • Low-quality images: Avoid posting low-quality images on your Pinterest account. Most of us are visual creatures and Pinterest is essentially a visual search engine. Make sure that your image looks good and is not blurry. I also suggest that you use premium photos when possible. There is nothing worse than using the same image that everyone else has on their Pin.
  • Don’t ignore the boards. Make sure to take advantage of group boards and engage with them regularly. Inside the Tailwind App is a community feature. It makes it easier to find and pin to community boards. Also, consider starting your own group board as well.
  • Share Content: In addition to sharing your own content, be sure to also repin and engage with content from other users. This helps to build relationships and drive engagement on your own content.
  • Don’t be inconsistent: People are finicky and you need to keep your followers engaged, it is important to consistently add new Pins. You should be pinning daily. The easiest way to do this is to use an app like Tailwind or Simplified. I use both. I currently schedule around 300-400 pins monthly through automation. I love that in essence I can schedule in advance and work on other things on a day-to-day basis.
  • Don’t make your profile hard to find. Make sure that your profile is keyword rich. Include relevant keywords in your description so that readers can find you.
  • Don’t pin all your pins into one board. It’s important that you have different boards on your Pinterest account. This helps to keep your boards attractive and organized. Create a theme for each board. Think of the categories that you have on your site and create boards around those categories.
  • Hashtags: Avoid using an excessive number of hashtags in your pin descriptions. This can make your content look spammy and may negatively impact its discoverability. Also, hashtags don’t work in the same manner on Pinterest as they do on other platforms.
  • Don’t Pin everything. Avoid pinning a wide range of unrelated content, as this can make your boards appear disorganized and lack cohesiveness. Pinterest users generally prefer well-organized boards, so try to keep your pins focused and connected to your business. While it is okay to share interesting content that your audience may enjoy, make sure to keep it relevant to your brand.

Cluttering your boards with a wide range of unrelated pins can make it difficult for users to find what they are looking for and may deter them from following your account. If you must pin random stuff then pin it to a personal Pinterest profile that is separate from your business profile.

PINTEREST SAYS

“The best Pins are visually compelling, tell a good story and make people want to learn more.”

Use Standard Pins

Pick a verticle image: In order to make your content stand out in users’ feeds, it is important to use high-quality vertical images with a 2:3 aspect ratio (e.g. 1000 x 1500 pixels). Pins with ratios other than 2:3 may be truncated or have reduced performance.

Make your brand the focal point: Ensure that your brand is the main focus of your pins. Display your product or service prominently, and avoid using abstract or unrelated imagery. This will help to effectively showcase your brand to users.

Ensure that your logo is included on every pin you create: However, try to keep it subtle and avoid placing it in the lower-right corner, as this area may be covered by Pinterest’s product icons.

Include text overlay: Text overlay on your pin images can help them stand out and attract attention. Make sure to keep your copy concise and easy to read on mobile devices. If you are targeting multiple countries, it is important to create separate pins for each location so that they can be translated into the local language.

Optimize your Pin copy: In order to make your pins more discoverable in search, it is essential to optimize their titles and descriptions. You have up to 100 characters for the title and up to 500 characters for the description, so be sure to use them effectively.

Verify links: Ensure that the links within your pins are functional and load quickly. The content and imagery of your pin should match the topic and image of the destination site, so be sure to double-check these details to ensure a seamless experience for users.

5 Tips For Writing Clear And Optimized Pinterest Pin Titles

  • Optimize your Pinterest pin titles with keywords to improve searchability.
  • Instead of simply repeating your description, try to come up with unique and compelling titles.
  • Avoid using the word “click” in your title,
  • Use title case for a polished and professional look.
  • Make sure to prioritize the first 30 characters, as they often appear as the preview text.

Common SEO Myths

  1. “Keywords don’t matter anymore.” This is a common myth that has been circulating for a while now. While it is true that keyword stuffing can hurt your rankings, keywords are still a crucial aspect of SEO. Using relevant and targeted keywords can help your blog rank higher in search results and attract the right audience.
  2. “Content-length doesn’t matter.” Another myth is that content length doesn’t matter as long as it is high-quality. However, research has shown that longer content tends to rank better in search results. This is because longer content usually provides more value and information to the reader, which can lead to a better user experience.
  3. “SEO is all about tricks and hacks.” Some people believe that SEO is all about finding sneaky ways to trick search engines into ranking your blog higher. However, this is not true. SEO is about creating a high-quality, user-friendly website that provides value to its visitors. It is about understanding how search engines work and creating content that aligns with their guidelines.
  4. “Social media doesn’t impact SEO.” Social media and SEO are often thought of as separate entities, but they can actually have a significant impact on each other. Social media can drive traffic to your blog, which can improve your search rankings. Additionally, social media signals, such as shares and likes, can influence your search rankings.
  5. “Guest blogging is a waste of time.” Guest blogging can be a valuable way to build your brand and get your content in front of a new audience. It can also help improve your search rankings by getting backlinks from high-quality websites. However, it is important to make sure that the websites you guest blog for are reputable and relevant to your industry.
  6. “Meta tags don’t matter anymore.” Meta tags, including the title tag and meta description, are still an important aspect of SEO. These tags help search engines understand the content on your page and can influence whether or not someone clicks on your website.

  8. “Paid links can improve your rankings.” Buying links to improve your search rankings is a big no-no. Search engines consider paid links to be a form of spam and can penalize your website for using them. It is important to earn your links naturally by creating high-quality content that others want to link to.
  9. “SEO is only for big businesses.” SEO is not just for big businesses with big budgets. It is for any business or website owner who wants to improve their search visibility and drive traffic to their website. With the right strategies and techniques, small businesses can compete with larger ones in search results.
  10. “SEO is easy.” SEO can seem easy at first, but it is a constantly evolving field that requires a lot of knowledge and effort to master. It takes time and resources to research, create, and optimize content, as well as track and analyze results.

  12. Keyword Stuffing. One popular myth is that keyword stuffing will help boost rankings in the SERPs (search engine results pages). This simply isn’t true; in fact, keyword stuffing may actually hurt your ranking because it makes content difficult for users to read or understand due to overuse of keywords.
  13. Link Building doesn’t matter. Another myth is that link building doesn’t matter anymore – but this couldn’t be further from the truth! What Types Of SEO Do I Need

When it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), there are several different types to consider. Here are some of the main categories of SEO:

  1. On-page SEO: This type of SEO focuses on optimizing the individual pages of your website to improve their ranking in search results. This includes optimizing your website’s content, images, and technical aspects like page speed and mobile-friendliness.
  2. Off-page SEO: Off-page SEO refers to the actions you take outside of your website to improve its search rankings. This includes getting backlinks from other reputable websites, as well as utilizing social media to drive traffic to your website.
  3. Technical SEO: Technical SEO involves optimizing the underlying technical aspects of your website to improve its search rankings. This includes things like improving your website’s page speed, ensuring it is mobile-friendly, and optimizing your website’s URLs and navigation.
  4. Local SEO: If you have a brick-and-mortar business or you want to attract customers from a specific geographic location, then local SEO is important. This type of SEO involves optimizing your website for local search terms and including your location in your website’s content and meta tags.
  5. E-commerce SEO: If you have an online store, then e-commerce SEO is crucial. This type of SEO involves optimizing your product pages and categories to improve their ranking in search results and drive sales.

Which types of SEO you need will depend on your business and goals. It is important to conduct a thorough analysis of your website and target audience to determine which types of SEO will be most beneficial for your business. Since my blog site is not a local business, then it would not make sense to focus my time or energy on local SEO.

  3. Optimize your website’s technical aspects: This includes things like page speed, mobile-friendliness, and the structure of your website’s URLs and navigation.
  4. Utilize header tags: Header tags, such as H1 and H2, help break up your content and make it easier for both users and search engines to understand the hierarchy of your information.
  5. Use internal and external links: Linking to other relevant and high-quality websites can help improve your credibility and search rankings. It is also important to use internal links to direct users and search engines to other pages on your website.
  6. Optimize your images: Using descriptive, relevant filenames and alt tags for images can help search engines understand the content on your website and improve your search rankings.
  7. Use social media: Having a presence on social media platforms and actively sharing your content can help drive traffic to your website and improve your search rankings.
  8. Monitor and analyze your results: Use tools like Google Analytics to track your website’s traffic and see how well your SEO efforts are paying off. This can help you understand what is and isn’t working and adjust your strategy accordingly.
  9. Optimizing your website for search engines can seem daunting at first, but by following these tips and staying up-to-date with the latest best practices, you can improve your search rankings and drive more traffic to your website.

What Is The Biggest SEO Myth?

Off the top of my head I would say that a small domain authority (DA) site
can’t outrank a higher dA site.

Many people have misconceptions about how to optimize their websites for search engines. It’s important that you separate the myths from the facts. One of the best things that you can do for your blog site is to get a solid understanding of how SEO works and what is an SEO myth, vs an SEO Fact.

Child themes are used to make customizations, add new functionality, or change the design of a website without modifying the parent theme. This allows users to update the parent theme without losing their customizations.
  45. Trackback: Another term that isn’t used much anymore, but trackbacks were once a way for bloggers to notify each other when they had linked to one another’s posts in their own articles. Nowadays, most people just use pingbacks (more on that in a minute), or they simply mention each other in their posts without using any formal notification system.
  46. Traffic: The number of visitors to a blog or website.
  47. URL: The web address of a specific webpage.
  48. Vlog | Vlogger: A vlog, short for “video blog,” is a type of online content that consists of video recordings of the creator’s daily activities, thoughts, or experiences. Vlogs are similar to traditional text-based blogs, but instead of written content, they use video as the primary medium for sharing information
  49. Web Host: A web host is a company that provides the technologies and services needed to host a website on the internet. When you create a website, you need somewhere to store all of the files and data that make up your site. A web host provides this storage space, as well as the necessary technologies to make your website accessible to internet users
  50. Widget: A widget is a small, standalone application that runs on a web page or within a web-based platform. It is designed to perform a specific function or provide a specific service, such as displaying the weather, displaying the current time, or providing access to social media features

Recap

As a new blogger, you are going to encounter a ton of new terms. I highly suggest that you become familiar with all of them so that when you see them, you will have a better understanding of how all these terms tie together.

I know firsthand that I am more productive when I am organized and my desk is free of clutter. There is something that distracts you from the task at hand when you look down and there is a ton of misc papers on your desk. It’s time to get organized.

2. Self- Host Your Blog

As a blogger, self-hosting your website is an important consideration. Self-hosting refers to hosting your website on your own domain, rather than using a free hosting service like WordPress.com or Blogger. There are several benefits to self-hosting your website as a blogger.
First, self-hosting gives you complete control over your website. This includes the ability to install custom plugins, themes, and integrations and access your website’s files and data.

Second, self-hosting allows you to fully monetize your website. Free hosting services often have strict guidelines on what types of advertisements and monetization strategies you can use, which can limit your earning potential.

Finally, self-hosting can give your website a more professional appearance, as it shows that you are committed to your blog and willing to invest in its success. This can be particularly important if you are looking to work with brands or sponsors in the future.

3. Use A Premium Theme For WordPress

I am not going to argue with anyone about the value of having a premium theme if you plan to take your blog to another level. Here is the reality! If your website looks “blah, blah.” I will not share a single article or even bother to leave a comment. I’m not pinning a single pin to a blog site that doesn’t have any appeal. You may be an award-winning writer, but you still need to have a theme that is visually appealing to your reader.

Most free themes don’t make updates and typically provide no support. Hence if WordPress makes an update, your entire blog site may not work. In addition, you want a theme that you can customize with your brand style which includes your fonts and colors. Make sure that your theme flows well and is easy to navigate.

The goal at the end of the day is to keep the reader on your blog site as long as possible. Having the right theme will ensure that visitors stay longer.

4. Update Old Content

As a blogger, it’s important to regularly update and refresh your content to keep it relevant and engaging for your readers. This includes revisiting and updating old posts on your blog.

There are several reasons why updating old content is important. First, it helps improve the overall quality and accuracy of your blog. As time passes, information and best practices can change, and it’s important to ensure that your content reflects these updates.

Second, updating old content can help improve your search engine rankings. Search engines like Google place a high value on fresh, relevant content, and regularly updating your blog can help improve your website’s visibility in search results.

Finally, updating old content can help keep your readers engaged. By providing new and updated information, you are giving your readers a reason to come back to your blog and stay engaged with your content.

Overall, updating old content is a crucial aspect of maintaining a successful blog. It helps improve the quality and accuracy of your content, improves your search engine rankings, and keeps your readers engaged.

5. Stock Photos | Images

I get so many compliments on the images that I use on my blog sites. It’s important to try and use images that everyone else is not using. You want your site to have a branded cohesive look and feel to it. I happen to be an amateur photographer and will oftentimes go out and take my own photos (trust me, my sony camera does the real work).

Using high-quality, professional stock photography is an important consideration for any blogger. While it may be tempting to use free images found online, there are several reasons why using premium stock photography is a better option.

First and foremost, using free images can often result in copyright infringement. Many images found online are protected by copyright laws, and using them without permission can result in legal consequences.

On the other hand, premium stock photography is licensed for commercial use, which means that you can use it on your blog without worrying about copyright issues. This can save you time and hassle in the long run, as you won’t have to worry about tracking down the original source or dealing with any legal issues.

Additionally, premium stock photography is generally of higher quality and more professional than free images. This can help improve the overall look and feel of your blog, as well as give your readers a better impression of your brand.

Overall, using premium stock photography is a worthwhile investment for any blogger. It not only protects you from potential legal issues, but it also helps improve the appearance and professionalism of your blog.

6. Implement A Content Marketing Strategy

Not having a content marketing strategy in place is one of the most overlooked aspects of blogging. We all wish that Simon could just hit the golden buzzer in blogging and put us at the top and thousands of readers would see our blog articles and Google would simply fall in love with us. In reality, you have to plan every aspect of your blog and that includes having a strategy.

What exactly is a Content Marketing Strategy? Glad that you asked. In a nutshell, it is simply what are you going to do once you hit the post button and your blog post goes live. What’s next? How do you get people to know that you have a new blog article?

My #1 way is to immediately send out a quick newsletter blast to my readers that are subscribed to my newsletter. These folks have opted-in to engage with you, hence they want to hear from you. Don’t overthink it. Just send out a quick email and let them know that you have a new article that has been posted.

My favorite way that will get eyes on your blog article is through Pinterest Marketing. I use the Tailwind App to schedule my Pinterest Pins. With every blog article that I write, I create from the start a minimum of 10 Pinterest Pins that I will post over the next 7 days to get an influx of traffic. I highly suggest that you consider using Tailwinds to put your pinning on autopilot. It is a lifesaver and timesaver.

Learning Pinterest should be a top priority in 2023!

7. Consistency In Blogging

As a blogger, it’s important to remain consistent in order to build and maintain a strong following. Here are a few reasons why consistency is crucial:

  1. It helps establish your credibility: By consistently posting high-quality content and meeting your own publishing deadlines, you can establish yourself as a credible and reliable source of information. This can help build trust with your readers and establish your blog as a go-to resource in your niche.
  2. It helps grow your audience: Consistently posting new content gives your readers a reason to come back to your blog and helps attract new readers. By establishing a regular posting schedule, you can keep your readers engaged and help grow your audience.
  3. It helps with search engine rankings: Search engines like Google favor websites that regularly publish fresh, relevant content. By consistently posting new content, you can improve your website’s visibility in search results and drive more traffic to your blog.
  4. It helps with planning and organization: By maintaining a consistent posting schedule, you can better plan and organize your content creation and promotion efforts. This can help save time and ensure that you are consistently providing value to your readers.

Overall, consistency is a crucial element of successful blogging. It helps establish your credibility, grow your audience, improve your search engine rankings, and streamline your content creation efforts.

8. Grow Your Email List

You absolutely have to make growing your email list a top priority this year. I can not stress the importance of creating and growing your email list! Unless you had your head buried in the sand, then you should be aware that big platforms like Instagram and FB went offline several times and individuals appeared to have lost their minds. If you had a mailing list, then you were able to still connect with your audience.

If you don’t remember anything, please remember this: We do not own these social media platforms. I’ve seen influencers get their accounts suspended and they had zero ways to connect with any of their followers. If they had a robust mailing list that they own, then there would be no worries.

I use ConvertKit and it does what I need it to do. I love the simplicity and the templates. You can customize the templates and really give them your brand or you can keep it basic. It’s up to you.

I have several different newsletters because I run several different blog sites. I suggest that you do a weekly newsletter to keep subscribers from unfollowing you (don’t get into a tizzy when someone unfollows you!) I highly suggest that automate your newsletter and make it evergreen content- this way you have a newsletter that automatically goes out on a weekly basis in a sequence. You do have to put in some work on the front end to get the sequence started, but it will save you time on the backend because you can do it and let it do what it do!

The Quickest Way To Grow Your Email List Is To Create A Freebie!

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR AUDIENCE WANTS AND NEEDS

The goal is to get your audience to exchange their email address for something that you give them that is of value. You want them to subscribe to your blog. Offering a freebie is a simple easy way to say thanks! I appreciate you!

As you continue to grow your list don’t forget to purge folks that aren’t engaging with you. Most email list platforms are based on the number of subscribers. Thus you don’t want folks that aren’t engaging with you, taking up valuable space on your list. It’s ok to say “Hit the road Jack!”

9. Grow Your Social Media

We love it, we hate it, and some days it really is overwhelming, however, you absolutely must engage with social media on a daily basis. The key is to plan it out and put it on autopilot when possible. If you really haven’t mastered social media, now is the perfect time to start. The beginning of the year is always a good place to hit the reset button and focus on growing your blog traffic as a result of social media engagement.

Think of your social media as an extension of your blog site. Using this very article as an example. Once I hit the post button. I will post to Instagram a snippet of the highlights of this article. I may create an IG story on blogging goals as well.

1. Affiliate Links | Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is another popular way for bloggers to make money. It’s one of the easiest things to implement on your blog site. Affiliate marketing is when a blogger promotes a product or service on their blog and receives a commission from the sale. The commission varies from product to product but is typically a percentage of the sale price. Sales are tracked through a unique link – referred to as an affiliate link. When a potential customer clicks on your affiliate link, a cookie is generated and stored in their browser, this cookie in turn is used by the company to track where the sale came from. Just know that the internet is very, very smart and knows where the sale came from.

Affiliate links are by far the easiest way to earn money when you are just getting your blog up and running. Coming out the gate you won’t have a ton of traffic or page views, thus you can still earn money by writing solid content that incorporates a few affiliate links. One of the easiest ways is to do either a review of products or top products or services – such as what I did on the Blogging Tools Recommendations Page.

On Brag Differently, Opulence Manor, and 750 Credit Score, I am an affiliate for a variety of companies, hence if you click on a link for an affiliate and make a purchase, they will pay me a commission. My commission does not increase the cost of the product or service you may purchase. If you were to click on my link for Bluehost and sign up for hosting, I would earn a commission. You also want to make sure that the affiliates that you promote are somehow tied into your blog site.

Easy Affiliate Programs To Join

Amazon

If you don’t know who Amazon is then you really have been hiding under a rock. Amazon sells everything on the planet. Most bloggers start out with Amazon Associates when getting started as it is one of the easiest programs to join. You can recommend a multitude of products via Amazon.

Bluehost

Bluehost has a simple affiliate program that is easy to implement and you can start promoting Bluehost from day one. It is also the hosting company that I use for hosting all my blog sites. The current payout starts at $65 per sign-up. The easiest way to incorporate Bluehost is to provide a tutorial page (just like this) that shows bloggers all the steps to get up and running. Make sure you share your affiliate link all throughout the post. It is that simple. Take a look at this very paragraph and you will see that I have shared my affiliate link. It really is that easy!

Affiliate Networks

To find affiliate programs, you can search for them online or contact the company directly. Many companies have affiliate programs, but not all of them advertise them.

The vast majority of companies use third-party vendors to handle their affiliate programs. These programs are known as affiliate networks, they essentially consolidate affiliate programs under one roof. My Top Affiliate Network programs that I work with are:

Affiliate programs pay a flat rate or percentage commission per sale. Amazon pays from 1-10% based on the product and product category. When using an affiliate network, each individual advertiser sets their commission rate in their terms and conditions. I’ve received commissions ranging from 1% up to 100% of the first year of service!

For example, let’s say you have a blog about fashion. You could include affiliate links to clothing items in your blog posts. If a reader clicks on the link and purchases the item, you earn a commission.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money because it’s a passive income stream. That is, you can continue to earn money from a single blog post even after it’s published.

Who Pays The Blogger?
The vast majority of affiliate networks will pay you on behalf of the advertiser. Most bloggers opt to get paid via their PayPal or stripe accounts. It can vary from program to program. You may also have the option to receive your payment through direct deposit.

Affiliate programs typically pay on a monthly basis with a minimum threshold (ex. $25, $50 or $100) and they normally have a 30 ton 90 payment delay to ensure there are no chargebacks, returns, or refunds.

2. Advertisers

Advertising is the most common way that bloggers make money. Advertisers pay bloggers to display their ads on their blogs. The amount of money that a blogger can earn from advertising varies depending on the size of their blog and the amount of traffic they get.

The most common form of advertising on blog sites is called CPM advertising via an ad network. The ad network handles all aspects of the advertising for you. They find the advertisers, negotiate the fees and install the ads on your site for you. Hence all you have to do is sit back and continue to write great content and drive traffic to your site. The more traffic you get the more money you will make. You do have some flexibility where ads are placed on your site. You can visit Opulence Manor or any blog site and chances are you are going to see advertisements.

I personally, don’t like to see a million ads pop up on a blog site, however, I fully understand the money that is involved. There are tons of blog sites earning real money from ad placement. You normally get paid based on how many people view the ads. This is simply known as RPM (Revenue per one thousand impressions) If you had 50,000 page views per month and an average RMP of $25, you could earn $1,250 per month, just off of ads on your website.

The most popular ad networks that you will see on blog sites are as follows:

Google Adsense

Google Adsense is a program that allows you to place ads on your website or blog. When a reader clicks on the ad, you earn money. Adsense is a popular way to make money because it’s easy to set up and you don’t need to sell ad space or participate in sponsored posts. However, the downside of Adsense is that you don’t have much control over the ads that are shown on your site. And, the earnings can be quite low.

The benefit of Google Adsense is that it open to anyone. You can start with them as soon as your site is up and running.

AdThrive

AdThrive is considered the holy grail of advertising platforms when it comes to blogging. You need to achieve 100,000 page views monthly. They handle all aspects of placing the ads on your blog site, thus you just need to sit back and continue to write great content and let the money roll in. AdThrive really is amazing and they work hand in hand with you to ensure that you are maximizing your ad revenue.

Monumetric

The moment you reach a minimum of 10,000 page views, you are in it to win it. You can sign up with Monumetric’s Propel Program and they will do all the heavy lifting for you. Money begins to roll in the moment they are live on your site. Monumetric offers a tier program that enables you to grow your revenue as your site visitors increase. To qualify for the monumetric Propel Program, you will need to meet the following:

  • Must be a WordPress or blogger site
  • 10k-80k pageview per month
  • Implement 6 ad clots on both desktop and mobile
  • Sidebar must be 300px wide
  • Minimum 50% traffic from the US, UK, CAN & AUS
  • The site must be approved by major Ad providers

Ezoic

Ezoic offers a free trial for all products and features. No payment method or commitment is required to sign-up to use Ezoic. I think that Ezoic is a good way to test out ads on your site. I like that I am able to decide where the ads go.

  • Site size. A minimum of 10,000 site visits per month. …
  • Google Policy. Adhere to Google’s Publishers Policies that require attributes such as original content, no keyword stuffing, and no invalid clicks or impressions.
  • Site Content. …
  • AdSense Supported

I currently work with Ezoic. You typically need an established threshold of page views in order to qualify. My goal is to qualify with Monumetric next and then move on to Mediavine at some point.

In addition, you could work directly with an advertiser and have them pay you a flat rate to have ad placement on your blog site. For example, you could charge $50 per month for a small banner ad on your blog.

Or, you could charge $0.10 per view, meaning you’d earn $10 for every 1,000 people who saw the ad. This option is often more lucrative but it generally requires higher traffic levels.

Who Pays The Blogger?
Most if not all ad networks will pay you directly. As with the affiliate networks, you will have a delay in receiving payments for 30-90 days and you will also have a minimum payout that you will need to reach. You should expect to get paid via direct deposit or PayPal.

3. Selling Courses or Ebooks

If you have expertise in a specific topic, you could create and sell a course or ebook. For example, you could create a course on how to start a blog. This is a great way to make money because you can sell your course or ebook over and over again. Once you create it, it’s generally a passive income stream.

Here are the courses that I’ve created and sell on this very blog site.

Brag Differently Course

4. Selling Digital Products

Selling digital products is another way that bloggers can make money. Many bloggers create and sell ebooks, courses, or other digital products. The price of these products can vary, but most bloggers charge between $9 and $95 for their digital products.

In addition to courses and ebooks, you could also sell other digital products, such as templates, graphics, or stock photos.

This is a great way to make money if you’re creative or have experience with design. For example, you could create a template for a resume and sell it on your blog.

I sell VIP Lifetime Access to my products – Check it out here – Lifetime VIP Access

5. Sponsored Posts

Another way to work with advertisers is to participate in sponsored posts. This means you write a blog post about a specific product or service and the advertiser pays you for it.

Typically, you’ll need to disclose that the post is sponsored, but sponsored posts are a great way to earn money because you’re essentially being paid to write about something you’re interested in.

As we mentioned earlier, sponsored posts are when you write a blog post about a specific product or service and the advertiser pays you for it.

This is a great way to make money because you’re essentially being paid to write about something you’re interested in.

6. Brand Partnerships

Brand partnerships are when you team up with a company to promote their products or services on your blog.

For example, you could team up with a clothing company to promote their new line of clothing. In exchange, they would pay you a fee or give you a percentage of the sales.

Brand partnerships are a great way to make money because you’re usually paid a lump sum upfront, which means you don’t have to wait to get paid.

Take a hard look around, there are probably brand partnerships that you haven’t thought about that would benefit you and your co-brand partner. Hubspot has a great article on examples of Successful Co-Branding Partnerships.

7. Selling Services | Products

Last on the list of ways for a blogger to make money is through selling products or services.

You can sell both physical and digital products as discussed above. Physical products could be anything from t-shirts, mugs, journals and so much more. It really is up to you, just make sure that your products do tie back into your website. Take a look at other bloggers’ websites and see what types of products they sell. There are tons of sites that can provide done-for-you services and products – check out Fivver.

You can also sell services. You may offer SEO services or coaching services if those are things that you are great at. You will see tons of bloggers that offer courses about blogging or coaching. Here are a few ideas of services that you can offer as a blogger:

  • Coaching
  • Consulting
  • Canva Templates
  • Social Media Management
  • Virtual Assistance
  • Blog Audits
  • Pinterest Pin Creations

You can start selling products and services with a very small presence and audience. I highly suggest that you start your mailing list in order to ensure your success.

How Does The Blogger Get Paid

You as the blogger determine how you get paid for the products and services that you offer. It is your responsibility to obtain payment from your customer. There are various platforms that you can incorporate into your blog site so that you can process payments for services and products. For example, I use ThriveCart for my courses. I use Stripe when someone wants to schedule a paid consultation with me. See here for an example – individuals can pay directly through my Stripe product link. I also use Convertkit for digital downloads

You can have payment terms that require payment in full, monthly, half up front, and half at completion. It is completely up to you to establish your payment terms and or payment plans.

Here Are A Few Bonus Options On Additional Ways To Earn Money On Your Blog:

  • Paid Webinars
  • Donation Button
  • Patreon membership
  • Hosting Workshops & paid retreats
  • Speaking engagements
  • Sponsor an online summit with other bloggers
  • Sell your blog site – I’ve seen bloggers sell their blog sites for six figures. Penny Pinchin Mom was sold for six figures
  • Create a podcast to complement your blog site
  • Create a Youtube Channel and embed your youtube videos on your website.

Using Social Media In Blogging To Make Money

  • How do bloggers make money on Instagram – One way is by promoting products or services as an influencer and earning a commission for each sale. Another way is by partnering with brands for sponsored posts or sponsored Instagram Stories. You could also sell products or services, such as ebooks or courses, through their Instagram account.
  • How do bloggers make money on Facebook – Similar to making money on Instagram, you could share your affiliate links. I also recommend having your own Facebook group for your blog site, where you can promote your content, products, and services.
  • Pinterest is both a social media tool and a search engine. I would suggest making Pinterest Pins that also link directly to your products and services in addition to linking to blog articles. Do not sleep on the power of a Pinterest Pin!
